Nació en Nueva York el 3 de marzo de 1926. Es autor de doce libros de poemas.  Obtuvo dos National Book Awards por Nights and Days y Mirabell; el Bollingen Prize in Poetry por Btaving the Elements; el Pulitzer Prize por Divine Comedies; el primer Bobbit National Prize for Poetry, concedido por la Biblioteca del Congreso, por The Inner Room; el National Book Critics Circle Award en poesía por The Changing Light at Sandover. Su último libro fue Late Settings, el cual apareció poco después de su muerte.  También fue autor de dos novelas, The (Diblos) Notebook y The Seragio y dos obras de teatro; The Inmortal Husband y The Bait.  Tine un libro de ensayos: Recitative y un libro de memorias: A Different Person.  Murió el 6 de febrero de 1995.
